From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Voters in the Russian-speaking Dniester region of Moldova completed elections for a parliament. They hope the results will force the republic, formerly known as Moldavia, to compromise on ethnic minority rights and keep the area part of the Soviet Union. Leaders of the self-proclaimed Dniester republic have said that, if their demands are not met, they will form their own separate republic within the Soviet Union. The Moldovan Parliament has declared the separate Dniester government and the elections illegal.
