Whittier : Legal Maneuvers Continue Over Shopping Center Pact

Share

Legal maneuvering between the proposed developer of a Whittier shopping center and the Whittier Redevelopment Agency continued last week after the developer received a preliminary injunction against the agency.

The injunction prevents the agency from canceling its contract with Urbatec to develop the 16-acre Whittier Station Center.

The Redevelopment Agency and Urbatec have been fighting over financing and what type of store should anchor the shopping center. John MacLauren, owner of Urbatec, called the latest legal maneuver a “major defeat” for the agency.

Murray Kane, attorney for the Redevelopment Agency, said the injunction obtained by Urbatec simply maintains the status quo until there is a trial. The agency is now reviewing its legal options, he said. “The bottom line is we both have claims about the status of the contract,” he said.

Kane said a court date has not been set.
