SANTA PAULA : 2 Sites Accept Home Hazardous Wastes

Share

Old paint, auto batteries and used motor oil now can be legally disposed of at sites in Santa Paula and the Ojai Valley, according to a Ventura Regional Sanitation District official.

The district will collect these household hazardous wastes at the Toland Road Landfill and the Ojai Anti-Litter Transfer Station for no charge.

Besides the new sites, which began operating Saturday, the Bailard Landfill in Oxnard accepts all three materials. The Bailard facility has collected them for about a year.

Tossing hazardous wastes into regular trash is illegal, said Mike Ewens, the sanitation district’s resource recovery manager. The district needed permits from five county agencies, including the fire and environmental health departments, to start the new collection and recycling operations.

Collection is on Saturdays only, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Toland Road Landfill, 3500 N. Toland Road, Santa Paula. The service may be extended to other days depending on the demand, Ewens said.

The Ojai transfer station is accepting the wastes Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the end of Old Baldwin Road off California 150.
