From Times Staff and Wire Service Reports

A woman and her infant daughter remained hospitalized today after poisonous emissions from a small barbecue filled their home and killed two other members of their family.

Canh Thi Nguyen, who is in her early 20s, was reported in critical condition in the intensive care unit at the Medical Center of Garden Grove. Her 2-week-old daughter, Sophia, was listed in guarded but stable condition at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana.

The Nguyen family was overcome Wednesday night by poisonous carbon monoxide gas from a small barbecue being used to heat the poorly ventilated garage apartment in the 700 block of North Figueroa St. in Santa Ana. The husband, Nghiep Tan Nguyen, 39, and his son, Jollivet, apparently died of asphyxiation Wednesday night.

“Unfortunately, this type of thing is not really all that rare,” Santa Ana Police Sgt. Roger Scharf said.

The family was found about 8:30 p.m. by a friend who walked into the apartment and saw the man, the boy and the woman sprawled in a front room, police said. The infant was found in another room.
