David White; Stage, Movie and TV Actor

David White, character actor best known for his role as Larry Tate on the long-running ABC television series “Bewitched,” has died. He was 74.

White died Tuesday of a heart attack at the Medical Center of North Hollywood.

Trained in the 1940s by the Pasadena Playhouse and the Cleveland Playhouse, White was popular on stage and in films as well as in several television series.

His Broadway credits from 1949 to 1960 included “Leaf and Bough,” “Affairs of State,” “The Bird Cage,” “Anniversary Waltz” and “One Foot in the Door.”

In recent years, his stage work included “Savages” at the Mark Taper Forum in 1975, “Enemy of the People” at the Seattle Repertory in 1979 and “Handy Dandy” at Los Angeles’ Theatre West in 1984.

Among his films were “Sweet Smell of Success,” “The Apartment,” “The Great Imposter,” “Madison Avenue” and “Sunrise at Campobello.”

Other than “Bewitched,” which ran from 1964 to 1972, White was frequently seen in such television series as “Cagney & Lacey,” “Remington Steele,” “Quincy, M.E.,” “The Love Boat” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”

White is survived by a daughter, Alexandra, and a nephew.

The family has suggested that any memorial donations be made to Theatre West or the Actors Fund.
