DIANA SMITH is president of a Parent Teacher Student Assn. in Riverside. She commented on the quality of education in California:

We don’t have (the funding), especially in our area. We are growing by leaps and bounds and we do not have the funds to build the schools to house the students.

As a parent, I sometimes wonder when you see so many cuts in education. You want the best for your child. But the money is not there--everything from Kleenex in the classroom, to computers. There’s not enough to go around anywhere.

Everybody has to make education a priority.

The press needs to be more positive when they talk about education.

As voters and as parents, we need to get more involved in the legislative issues (dealing with education). Parents need to go to school board meetings, but school board meetings need to be at a time when parents can attend. Parents need to know the teacher. Sometimes parents don’t even go to parent-teacher conferences. They need to feel welcome at the school, but they also need to go to the school. They can’t depend on the school to do their parenting.
