NEW YORK — A judge today set bail at $300,000 for the accused assassin of Rabbi Meir Kahane, touching off a storm of protest by Jews who jumped to their feet screaming, “God will punish you!” and “Filthy murderer!”
Enraged by the outburst, Justice Alvin Schlesinger ejected a shouting woman from the courtroom.
Moments later, about 40 supporters of the accused killer, El Sayyid Nosair, 35, burst from the room, smiling and hugging one another and shouting “God is God!”
Kahane, a militant Zionist and leader of Israel’s Kach party, was shot and killed Nov. 5 while attending a Zionist organization meeting in a mid-town Manhattan hotel.
Nosair pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder of a federal police officer, second-degree attempted murder, first-degree coercion, first-degree reckless endangerment, two counts of second-degree assault and three counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
