WORLD IN BRIEF : EGYPT : Ruling Party Wins Parliament Election
President Hosni Mubarak’s ruling party won an overwhelming majority in violence-marred parliamentary elections, according to final results tallied after a second round of voting. Figures announced by the Interior Ministry gave the governing National Democratic Party 348 of 444 seats being contested in the People’s Assembly. Major opposition parties boycotted the vote, charging that a new election law lacked adequate guarantees of free balloting. At least 10 people were reported killed, and nearly 100 wounded in voting-related clashes.
