She collects fine old silk kimonos from both sides of the Pacific Rim. Then, with an artist’s flair for combining colors and patterns, she cuts and sews them into these splendid one-of-a-kind vests and ties. Under the label Onano, Hollywood clothing designer Kathryn Kamifuji sells her handmade wares to the area’s toniest stores--Barney’s in South Coast Plaza, Fred Segal on Melrose Avenue, Weathervane Two in Santa Monica, Male I.D. in Pasadena’s Old Town. Retail prices are steep (about $50 for ties, $225 for vests), but Kamifuji’s attention to detail--heavy jacquard-patterned lining, fabric-covered buttons and two hidden pockets--makes the investment worthwhile.
