Paul R. Hutchinson, retired attorney and former president of the Los Angeles County Bar Assn. and the UCLA Alumni Assn., has died in a Glendale hospital. He was 86.

A longtime Glendale resident, Hutchinson died Saturday of natural causes, said his daughter, Carolyn Hutchinson.

Born Sept. 23, 1904, in Los Angeles, he graduated from Glendale High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from UCLA in 1926. Three years later, he graduated from the Boalt Hall School of Law at UC Berkeley. From 1947 to 1949, he was president of the UCLA Alumni Assn. and in 1948 served on the Board of Regents of the University of California, urging regents to establish a law school at UCLA.

Hutchinson, who was president of the Los Angeles County Bar Assn. in 1964, practiced general law in Los Angeles from 1929 until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers, Chancery Club, Delta Theta Phi fraternity and the Jonathan Club.

He is survived by a son, Paul Hutchinson Jr. of Newport Beach; daughter, Carolyn Hutchinson of Glendale; brother, Ralph W. Hutchinson of Sacramento, and two granddaughters. His wife, Elizabeth Hutchinson, died in 1976.

A funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday at Kiefer & Eyerick Mortuary, 314 E. Harvard St., Glendale, which is handling the arrangements. Burial will be private. Donations can be sent in Hutchinson’s name to an organization benefiting the homeless or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
