Fallbrook’s Milena Glusac, who placed seventh at the Kinney National Cross Country Championships last weekend, is one of 13 athletes from San Diego County invited to compete in the Sunkist Invitational at the Los Angeles Sports Arena Jan. 18.

Mt. Carmel, which has four athletes entered, will have the area’s largest contingent. Defending section 400-meter champion Allison Dring, who will compete in the 500-yard race, leads the list of Mt. Carmel competitors. Also from Mt. Carmel are Susan Scott (800), Greg Robeson (800) and Roque Balina (long jump).

Other entered are Morse’s Teddy Lawrence and Lincoln’s Scott Hammond (long jump), Monte Vista’s Latasha McKinney (60), La Jolla’s Julie Schoene (800), Castle Park’s Isaac Sanchez (800), Mar Vista’s Hector Hernandez and San Pasqual’s Robert Walker (mile) and Castle Park’s Eric Bell (60 high hurdles).

In one night, Serra sophomore Lynn Riordan broke the section record when she made as many three-point shots, 10, as she did last season.

Riordan made 10 of her 12 three-point shots against Poway Saturday, erasing the record set by Granite Hills’ Christina Adams, who made nine three times last year.

Riordan, a 5-4 point guard, scored 32 points in Serra’s 85-49 loss to Poway.

“When it was evident that she was so hot, I told her to keep shooting,” Serra Coach Larry Watson said. “Pretty soon, even the crowd got into it. We lost badly but at least we had a little excitement and fun.”

Last week, Mt. Carmel’s Vicki de Jesus needed only nine points to reach the career mark of 1,000 points. She scored 16 points in Mt. Carmel’s 61-14 victory against Mt. Miguel.

De Jesus, a four-year starter, has played in all but three games during her high school career and has scored in double figures in 50 of her past 55 games.

“We opened up the fast break a little bit more,” Coach Tracey Johnson said. “She’s able to get more rebounds and go coast to coast, which she hasn’t been able to do in the past. She has been very consistent all four years.”
