Digital May Announce Layoffs: Digital Equipment Corp., the nation’s second-largest computer maker, said it may resort to its first-ever layoffs in early 1991 as part of its $1-billion cost-cutting program. A total of 3,200 employees accepted voluntary severance packages in the 1990 fiscal year. The company has said it wants to reduce its staff by another 5,000 to 6,000 by the fiscal year ended June, 1991, to cut $1 billion in costs. The company said it expects that a considerable number of workers will leave in December--possibly 1,000 or more. It has about 124,000 workers.
