The state Department of Fish and Game reported today that 23 hunt saboteurs who tried to block a legal hunt in Solano County were fined a total of $16,000 and ordered to perform community work.

That’s an average of $696 apiece.

The department said in a statement that all 23 had been arrested at the Grizzly Island Wildlife Area in the Suisun Marsh south of Fairfield. The hunt for tule elk had been authorized by the state Fish and Game Commission after a public hearing process.
