College District Buys Headquarters Building

The Los Angeles Community College District has abandoned its plan to build new headquarters on Vermont Avenue across from Los Angeles City College and instead has bought an existing nine-story, $12-million office building in the Mid-Wilshire district.

The purchase is expected to be completed next week and the building, located at the southeast corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Norton Avenue, will then undergo $5-million worth of renovation, District Chancellor Donald G. Phelps said Thursday. Employees of the district’s central administration will move by next fall from controversial leased offices on 7th Street in downtown Los Angeles, which critics described as too lavish.

Escalating costs and zoning problems led the district to drop its plan to build on Vermont Avenue. Phelps said costs on Wilshire will be lower than current rent and that the district will wind up owning the building.
