SIMI VALLEY : 2 Methanol-Fueled Cars Bought by City
- Share via
The city of Simi Valley has purchased two vehicles that officials said can run on either unleaded gasoline or cleaner burning methanol fuel.
The two 1991 Chevrolet Lumina sedans bring to six the number of city-owned cars that can run on methanol, which significantly reduces the emissions that contribute to air pollution. The cost of methanol fuel is about 35 cents to 45 cents less per gallon than gasoline.
Bob Heitzman, deputy city manager, said the city recently purchased the cars through the California Energy Commission’s Alternative Fuel Demonstration Program. He said the state has a contract with General Motors to produce a certain number of methanol-powered vehicles every year. The cars are then sold to cities and agencies that have applied for them through the state program.
