3 Florida Areas on National League Expansion ‘Short List’
Six cities, including three from Florida, were chosen Tuesday as finalists for two National League expansion franchises that will begin play in 1993.
The candidates are Buffalo, Denver, Miami, Orlando, St. Petersburg-Tampa and Washington.
Eliminated were Nashville, Tenn.; Charlotte, N.C.; Phoenix and Sacramento, along with other ownership groups in several of the cities selected.
“It’s been a long time coming,” said Ron Safford, director of sports development for the Florida Department of Commerce. “Regardless of what cities are selected, Florida is the ultimate winner. We now feel we have a 50-50 shot, with half the teams on the list.”
Final selection of the two franchises is expected before the end of September.
