An official of UNLV vowed today to investigate fully the latest NCAA allegations against the university’s basketball program and move quickly to correct them.

The NCAA sent the university a letter of inquiry Tuesday detailing a list of new charges against the program, many of which reportedly stem from the recruitment of former New York City prep star Lloyd Daniels.

University legal counsel Brad Booke refused to disclose what the allegations were, but said the school would immediately begin its own investigation into the charges and would cooperate fully with the NCAA.

“This university is tired of being under the gray cloud and being the ugly stepchild of college sports,” Booke said. “We aim to get it right.”

The NCAA letter of inquiry comes just a few weeks after UNLV settled a 1977 case with the NCAA by agreeing to sit out the 1992 postseason basketball tournament and not to appear on live television during the 1992 season.

The charges, which stem from an investigation that began in 1987, had been widely anticipated and reportedly had been ready for some time. UNLV officials had asked that they not be released until after the 1977 case was complete.
