Jim Butler of Iowa City, Iowa, became the men’s singles champion at the U.S. Table Tennis Assn. national championships at the San Diego Convention Center.

Butler defeated John Onifade of Washington, D.C., 13-21, 21-23, 21-16, 21-18, 21-13. In the women’s singles, Wei Wang of Pasadena defeated Lillie Hugh of Cocoa, Fla., 21-14, 21-9, 21-8.
