Mobil to Pay Alaska $32.7 Million: Mobil Oil Co. has agreed to pay the state of Alaska $32.7 million to settle a tax dispute dating to 1977, state officials said. The Mobil agreement settled part of the $3.14 billion that the state contends is due in back taxes from oil companies that work Alaska’s North Slope. The state also maintains that $960.4 million is still owed by North Slope producers in royalties dating to 1977. Alaska Atty. Gen. Charles Cole said the Mobil tax settlement was encouraging but should not be seen as a signal that other settlements in the longstanding dispute are near.
