Nation IN BRIEF : GUAM : Disaster Declared in Wake of Typhoon
Guam has been declared a major disaster area, making it eligible for federal recovery funds, as the U.S. Pacific island territory struggles to recover from damage done by Typhoon Russ. President Bush’s declaration will enable storm victims to obtain temporary housing grants, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property and other aid. Typhoon Russ swept across Guam last Friday with winds of up to 150 m.p.h., leaving about 5,000 people homeless. Guam, the southernmost of the Mariana Islands, lies 1,500 miles southeast of the Philippines.
