U.S. Aid to the Soviet Union

Thank you for Pat Buchanan’s “The Bear Isn’t Starving: Don’t Feed It” (Commentary, Dec. 16). Once again, he is right on the money when he states: “Uncle Sam is launching a foreign-aid initiative--to rescue the last dictator . . . ,” and again: “You do the alcoholic no favor when you give him a drink; you do him a favor when you put him through cold turkey.”

If Mikhail Gorbachev intends to remain a dictator, he should not be helped. The people who are trapped in this Evil Empire do need help, but let’s not support those who prolong and run this evil enterprise.
