Officer Who Disappeared for 5 Days Back at Work

A Los Angeles police sergeant who disappeared and was the subject of a massive four-day search returned to work this week after Police Department experts decided he was psychologically fit for duty, authorities said Thursday.

Sgt. Christopher Vasquez, formerly an assistant watch commander at the North Hollywood station, returned to work Wednesday and was temporarily assigned to an administrative position with the Police Department’s Valley Bureau, said Capt. Dan Watson.

A 20-year-department veteran, Vasquez failed to report to work Dec. 10. More than 250 people combed the hillsides behind his townhouse in Moorpark and a 45-square-mile area for four days, fearing Vasquez might have become lost or injured while jogging in the hills. Vasquez returned five days later, saying he had hitchhiked to Salinas because he needed to think about personal problems.
