Subscription Bill Arrives Just a Tad (50 Years) Late

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was President when Anne Brestensky subscribed to Woman’s Household Magazine. She paid half of the $2 subscription fee to a salesman, and was told she would be billed later for the other dollar.

She did not realize how much later. The bill arrived in the mail 50 years later.

“I didn’t even know what it was when I got it,” said Brestensky, 77, who received the card at her Allegheny Township home five days before Christmas. “Where has it been all this time?”

The bill was mailed March 6, 1940.

“It just goes to show that a piece of mail, no matter how old it is, still is important to the Postal Service,” said Bill Zaken, communication manager for the U.S. Postal Service’s Pittsburgh office. “We deliver.”
