The huge crowd that turned out Tuesday in Pasadena for the two-hour, 102nd annual Tournament of Roses was clearly most “aah-ed” by the 18-ton purple people eater float. But the judges proved that they were not going to be swayed by a people-pleasing floral monster. The float won no trophies, losing out, in one category, to another monster, a giant Godzilla that appeared to be walking down Colorado Boulevard. All in all, though, it apparently was a delightful day for the hundreds of thousands--some estimates were as high as 1 million--who lined the parade route to see, and take part in, what one observer called the “biggest New Year’s party in the world.” Another estimated 400 million people in 85 countries watched it all on television.
