NATION : Weld Becomes Mass. Governor
Amid pomp and pageantry dating back more than 100 years, William F. Weld took the oath of office as Massachusetts’ 62nd governor today, facing some of the most deep-rooted and complex problems in the state’s history.
Weld, 45, the first Republican governor in Massachusetts in 16 years, was sworn in shortly after noon in the oak-paneled chamber of the House of Representatives as the man who held the office longer than any other in history, Democrat Michael S. Dukakis, took the traditional “lonely walk” out the center doors of the Statehouse.
Shortly afterward, veteran state Sen. Argeo Paul Cellucci was sworn in as lieutenant governor.
