The University of Minnesota is disputing at least three of the 21 rules violation allegations leveled against the men’s athletic program by the NCAA, according to a report published today.

In a draft letter to the NCAA obtained by the Saint Paul Pioneer Press, the university also said it will seek a reduced penalty from the NCAA.

The major allegation the university hopes to refute is one claiming that it failed to maintain “institutional control” over its athletic program.

The stakes on this issue are paramount: Lack of institutional control is a prerequisite for the NCAA’s stiffest punishments.

In its defense, Minnesota cites steps taken after a 1988 NCAA investigation that led to probation for the basketball Gophers and a reprimand for the football team.
