Ford Plans Temporary Layoffs: Ford Motor Co. said it will idle about 26,800 U.S. and Canadian workers at a dozen assembly plants this month because of a shortage of dealers’ orders. The closings follow similar moves announced in mid-December by General Motors Corp. and Chrysler Corp. All are being made to either trim unsold inventories or reduce the buildup of stockpiles in the face of weak vehicle demand--which reflects the sluggish economy, low consumer confidence and the lingering Persian Gulf crisis.
