Amorous Turks who leave loving messages on their pocket pagers have been told to cool it.

The state telephone company PTT has banned all words smacking of romance from pager subscribers, mostly bankers and businessmen, whose numbers have tripled to 21,000 in the last year.

Asked to end a message with the words I love you, a PTT telephonist said: “I am sorry. These words are banned.”

All “hot” words such as love and kiss are outlawed, she added.

Senior PTT officials, who say there is a six-month waiting list for pagers, declined to give reasons for the ban.
