A San Diego tour bus company announced Thursday that it will temporarily travel different routes in Coronado, despite its continuing opposition to a proposed city ordinance that the company feels improperly restricts public access to the beach.

During a six-month trial period beginning Jan. 14, Old Town Trolley Tours of San Diego will switch its routes from the west side of Coronado to the east side. The route change, which will put the company in accordance with a controversial proposal to ban buses from most residential streets, will eliminate stops at the historic Hotel del Coronado. Instead, the buses will stop at Le Meridien Hotel and the Old Ferry Landing.

Donald Harrison, a spokesman for the company, said if ridership is not adversely affected, the company will consider making the new route permanent. However, he said, he plans to continue to voice his opposition to the ordinance when it is reviewed by the California Coastal Commission later this year.

Coronado residents have sought to curb tour bus traffic on their streets, claiming the constant noise and pollution is tantamount to harassment. But the Coastal Commission has forbidden the ordinance from taking effect until it is judged not to limit public access to the coast unfairly.
