WORLD : Belushi Drug Source Rearrested
The woman who administered a lethal dose of drugs to comedian John Belushi in 1982 has been arrested on another drug charge.
Catherine Smith, 43, was arrested Thursday in a bar for investigation of possession of heroin for the purpose of trafficking, Sgt. Bill Warwick said.
The Ontario-born Smith, a former backup singer with Gordon Lightfoot and Hoyt Axton, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in Belushi’s death and served 18 months of a three-year sentence in a California jail.
Belushi died March 5, 1982, of an overdose of heroin and cocaine.
After her release in March, 1988, Smith moved to Toronto where she worked as a legal secretary and toured as a speaker, warning teen-agers of the perils of drugs.
