SPORTSCOPE : USC Volleyball Team to Open the Season at Mira Costa High

The USC defending national champion men’s volleyball team opens its season at 7:30 p.m. Saturday with an exhibition match against a Trojan alumni team at Mira Costa High. USC returns its entire roster from last season, including 6-foot-7 senior All-American Bryan Ivie, a Mira Costa graduate, and senior setter Dan Greenbaum, a Rolling Hills High graduate. The Trojans also have a strong recruiting class including two members of Mira Costa’s 1990 CIF 4-A Division title team, 6-5 Mike Ivie and 6-7 Mike Ashenfelter. The alumni team will feature pro beach standouts Tim Hovland and Steve Obradovich, 1986 NCAA player of the year Adam Johnson and former Trojan player and coach Bob Yoder. Tickets will be available at the door at $5 for adults and $3 for students.

Mira Costa Pony Baseball is accepting applications Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mira Costa High field. Boys and girls ages 5 to 12 are eligible. Sign-ups continue Jan. 12 and 19. The cost is $65 per player or $165 per family. Information: (213) 545-9808.

The Redondo Beach Pony League will hold sign-ups for its youth baseball and softball leagues Jan. 12 and 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Jan. 13 and 20 from noon to 4 p.m. at Alta Vista Park. Fees apply. Information: (213) 374-8492.
