What’s in a name? Not the D.

Ingram Micro D, the world’s biggest independent distributor of personal computer products, said Monday it is dropping the D from its name. It will now be known as Ingram Micro Inc.

“We decided to make the change because the shortened name is easier to say,” said Linwood A. (Chip) Lacy, chairman and chief executive of the Santa Ana-based company. “It’ll simply make things easier for ourselves, vendors and customers. In no way does the name change imply any substantive change.”

The name got more complicated when Nashville, Tenn.-based Ingram Industries Inc. acquired Santa Ana-based Micro D in 1989.
