NBA ROUNDUP : Wilkins Puts It All Together Against Spurs

Long considered one of the NBA’s most prolific scorers and slam-dunk artists, Dominique Wilkins of the Atlanta Hawks has lately been gaining accolades for his all-around performance and clutch play.

The veteran forward had another outstanding game Tuesday night, scoring 10 of his 40 points in the final 6:19 as the Hawks held off the San Antonio Spurs for a 109-98 victory at Atlanta.

Wilkins made 13 of 22 shots, 13 of 14 free throws and had eight rebounds as the Hawks won for the seventh consecutive time.

It was the fifth time in the last six games that Wilkins has scored 30 or more points.

“I’m at the top of my game,” Wilkins said. “The whole aspect of my game--not just scoring, but defensively and everything.”

The Hawks, who have won 10 in a row at home, took a 7-0 lead and surged to a 33-19 first-quarter lead. They increased their lead to 70-52 in the third quarter and stymied a run by the Spurs when Wilkins scored 12 points in the fourth quarter.

David Robinson had 35 points and 16 rebounds for the Midwest Division-leading Spurs, who had won nine of their previous 10 road games.

Paul Pressey added 18 points for the Spurs and Willie Anderson added 17.

Milwaukee 99, Washington 96--Frank Brickowski made two free throws with 15.8 seconds left as the Bucks broke an 18-year-old single-season team record with their 18th consecutive home victory.

Harvey Grant of the Bullets missed a jumper at the free throw line with seven seconds left and Jack Sikma made two more free throws for the Bucks, increasing the lead to 99-96 with 4.8 seconds left.

Ricky Pierce led the Bucks with 22 points and Brickowski had 19.

Bernard King scored 30 points for the Bullets.

Golden State 147, Denver 125--Tim Hardaway had 34 points and 12 assists and combined with Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin for 97 points at Oakland as the Warriors dealt the Nuggets their seventh consecutive loss.

Richmond scored a season-high 33 points and Mullin had 30, the first time this season three teammates have scored 30 points in the same game. The same players combined for 99 points in a 162-158 victory at Denver Nov. 2 in a game that set an NBA record for total points by two teams in a regulation game.

Detroit 101, Charlotte 98--Isiah Thomas scored 27 points and blocked a shot by Del Curry with four seconds left at Charlotte, N.C. as the Detroit Pistons held off the hapless Hornets for their seventh consecutive victory.

The Hornets have never beaten the Pistons in eight games.

Mike Gminski scored 20 points in his first start for the Hornets after his acquisition from Philadelphia.

Portland 123, Houston 97--Clyde Drexler, Kevin Duckworth and Danny Ainge each had 20 points for the Trail Blazers at Houston.

The Trail Blazers are 10-0 against Midwest Division teams.

The Rockets were without All-Star center Akeem Olajuwon, who is on the injured list with a fracture to a facial bone near his eye.

Boston 101, New York 87--Kevin McHale scored 28 points in his first start of the season to lead the Celtics over the Knicks at New York.

With Larry Bird remaining in Boston with back spasms, McHale helped the Celtics improve to 27-5, their best record with five losses since they were 28-5 in 1972-73.

Patrick Ewing scored 25 points for the Knicks, despite missing 15 of his first 20 shots.

Utah 110, Cleveland 88--The Jazz used a 25-5 run in the third quarter to extend their lead and cruise to the victory over the Cavaliers at Salt Lake City.

Jeff Malone scored 28 points and Karl Malone added 24 for the Jazz, who have won nine of 11 games.

Henry James had 21 points for the Cavaliers, who have lost eight consecutive games and are winless on the road since an injury to guard Mark Price Nov. 30 at Atlanta.

Miami 95, Sacramento 83--Sherman Douglas returned to the lineup after missing three games with a finger injury and scored 20 points to lead the Heat at Miami.

The Kings, who have lost 12 consecutive road games, shot only 38%.

Rookie Travis Mays scored 19 points and broke a Sacramento record by making all 14 of his free throws.

Chicago 111, New Jersey 102--Michael Jordan scored 41 points at Chicago as the Bulls dealt the Nets their eighth consecutive loss.

The Nets, who have lost 11 of 13, lost their 12th consecutive game at Chicago Stadium, where they haven’t won since 1985.
