Boskovich Takes Gamble to His Get Kicks at USC

Like most football players, Martin Boskovich spent his high school and junior college careers aspiring for a scholarship to a four-year school.

Boskovich, who made eight of 11 field-goal attempts and averaged 40.2 yards a punt for Glendale College last season, seemed to have fulfilled his desire when the University of Pacific offered him a grant.

But Boskovich, who graduated from St. Francis High in 1989, turned down a free ride to Pacific to try his foot at USC, where he will walk on this spring and compete for a position.

“In my 15 years at Glendale, I haven’t had a kid turn down a scholarship like that,” Glendale Coach John Cicuto said. “In his situation, though, he has a great opportunity to compete for a job at USC.”

Boskovich said the decision was not that difficult.

“Ever since I was a little kid I’ve been reared a Trojan,” Boskovich said. “From the time I came to Glendale, I had been thinking about (playing at USC). I talked to the coaches and watched practice at USC and just felt it would be something I would really regret if I didn’t give it a shot.”

Onward and upward: Linebacker Robert Tindall became the latest Glendale College football player to accept a scholarship from a four-year school when he enrolled at Cal State Northridge this week.

Ten Glendale players have accepted scholarships and four more are making their final recruiting visits.

Defensive back Ronnie Morgan and defensive lineman Wes McGarrity will visit Weber State this weekend. Defensive back Keith Franklin is scheduled to visit South Carolina and linebacker Lolesio Takapu is deciding between New Mexico State, Cal State Long Beach and Pacific, according to Cicuto said.

Meanwhile, recruiting is about to begin in earnest for the Vaqueros as they attempt to replenish a team that finished 9-2 last season.

“We’ve already had 30 kids walk in from (high) schools to inquire about coming to Glendale,” Cicuto said. “Next week we’ll start our big push.”

The time is now: It’s still early in the season, but the struggling Glendale College basketball team could be in the midst of a make-or-break portion of its schedule.

The Vaqueros, who began the week 6-9 overall and 0-1 in the Western State Conference, are at Cuesta tonight, play host to Oxnard Saturday then travel to Ventura on Monday.

“We just don’t make big shots or get something done at crucial times,” Coach Brian Beauchemin said. “I don’t know if that’s inexperience or inability to do that.”

Honor roll: Glendale High running back Pathon Rucker and lineman Albert Ocon and Hoover kicker David Bronner were selected to the All-Southern Section Division II team.

St. Francis tight end Martin Konrad was selected to the Division VII team.
