WORLD IN BRIEF : CHINA : Trials of Dissidents Ending, Official Says

China will soon conclude trials of all dissidents arrested after the suppression of pro-democracy demonstrations in 1989, a government spokesman said in Beijing. His remarks confirmed widespread reports that Communist authorities planned to finally close the chapter on the bloody events of June 4, 1989. At least 14 people have gone on trial recently for their roles in the student-led democracy movement.
