Southland : War Protesters, Lawmaker Talk
More than 60 members of two local anti-war groups rallied outside the Orange County offices of Rep. Christopher Cox (R-Newport Beach) this morning, urging a vote denying President Bush the power to begin war in the Persian Gulf.
Members of the Beyond War and the Alliance for Survival organizations gathered outside Cox’s offices, then were invited inside to speak with Cox, who is in Washington, via telephone.
Several protesters told Cox that sanctions against Iraq are working and that further negotiations with Saddam Hussein will prove more to America’s benefit in the long run.
In a recent poll, Cox stated that he would vote for a resolution giving the President a free hand in using military force in the gulf. Cox told protesters today that he wants the President “to avoid confrontation and war” and to show the Iraqis that “there is a penalty” for the invasion of Kuwait.
Another group scheduled an anti-war protest this evening on the campus of UC Irvine.
