Anaheim : Residents Purchase Land to Fight Crime

Share

Residents of the Clifton House apartments, tired of the threat of burglars and pranksters gaining access to their homes through a back alley, bought the access-giving strip of land from the city this week.

The Clifton Avenue residents believe that they will be able to cut the number of trips through the alley and thus reduce the chance that intruders will also use the passageway.

The tenants paid the city $1,000 for the piece of city land, a trend City Council members welcomed as an alternative type of crime fighting.

“Taking over some alley that has been troublesome--that’s great,” said Councilman Tom Daly, lauding the citizens’ initiative.

Jack Damm, president of the tenants group, said he didn’t see any great innovation in the group’s decision, but thought it was simply the logical way to handle the problem.

“We’ve been getting some break-ins, like all apartments get, and the folks don’t like it. This should cut down on some of the transients,” Damm said.
