From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A new branch of the Hayward Fault, accidentally discovered during work on the Ohlone College performing arts center, could explain a series of quakes in Fremont over the last two decades, seismologists said. The new-found fault poses less of a hazard than the Hayward Fault itself, according to Ivan Wong, a seismologist with a consulting firm that discovered it while working on the arts center site. Experts believe the Hayward Fault could produce a magnitude 7 quake within the next 30 years.
