Favored Ray Mercer, trailing on all three judges cards after eight rounds of the 12-round bout, knocked out Francesco Damiani of Italy with a left uppercut late in the ninth round to win the World Boxing Organization heavyweight championship. In another heavyweight bout at Atlantic City, unbeaten Tommy Morrison (25-0) stopped James (Quick) Tillis at 1:51 of the first round.
