Discordant Notes About Movie Music
Does this bother anyone else?: You see an exciting, suspenseful TV trailer for “Hamlet” punctuated with Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana” (used masterfully in “Excalibur”), but when you go to see the film, the music is not part of the soundtrack.
“Hamlet” is an excellent film, but it does not have the pacing, urgency or suspense implied by the use of those Gothic chants.
To make matters worse, “Warlock” is also using “Carmina Burana” in its trailers. (I’ll let someone else research that soundtrack.)
In these post-Milli Vanilli times, I would like to gently remind marketing executives everywhere to give us the real thing. This is one situation where substance over style and truth in advertising should prevail.
