Diego Maradona was fined $70,000 by Italy’s soccer tribunal in Milan for missing practices and games as a player for Napoli of the Italian League.

Napoli had asked the Italian League’s disciplinary commission to penalize Maradona for missing an Italian Cup match against Fiorentina and for refusing to join the team before a European Champions Cup match against Spartak Moscow in November.

Napoli also is suing Maradona, contending that his alleged misbehavior has damaged the club’s image.

Maradona missed practice several times during the season and has been feuding with Corrado Ferlaino, club president, General Manager Luciano Moggi and Coach Alberto Bigon.

Maradona, also captain of Argentina’s national team, is signed through 1993, but has said he wants to return home when the season ends or play elsewhere.
