Whirlpool to Take $56-Million Charge

Whirlpool Corp. said it will take a $56-million charge against earnings to pay for closing a Canadian plant and other changes in its refrigeration business.

The appliance maker said it will close its Port Credit, Ontario, plant by early 1992,cut about 500 jobs at its Ft. Smith, Ark., refrigerator plant in 1992 and add about 800 jobs at its Evansville, Ind., plant by January, 1993.

The restructuring charge will cover costs such as severance, training and outplacement help for employees who are dismissed, Whirlpool spokeswoman Carol Sizer said.
