U.S. to File Terrorism Charges, Lawyers Claim
The government plans to file new charges against two Los Angeles-area Palestinians who were arrested four years ago by the FBI and immigration officials and accused of participating in terrorism, their lawyers said Monday.
The two defendants, Khader Musa Hamide, 36, of Los Angeles, and Michel Ibrahim Shehadeh, 34, of Long Beach, were arrested along with five other Palestinians and a Kenyan. The eight became the focus of government deportation efforts. No criminal charges were filed.
After a federal court hearing Monday on a related issue, the lawyers said the new charges were sparked by the Immigration Act of 1990, signed into law last November. The government would allege that the two supported an organization that advocated terrorism, the lawyers said.
No date has been set for their deportation trial in U.S. Immigration Court.
