COUNTYWIDE : Artwork to Focus on Mountain Range

Share

Landscape paintings of the Santa Monica Mountains will be on display this spring under a government-sponsored program to draw attention to the flora and fauna of the range.

The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy Foundation, in a cooperative effort with the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, the California Department of Parks and Recreation and the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, is offering $8,000 in prizes to contributing artists.

“We hope this will inspire the residents to explore the natural resources of the Santa Monicas, as well as inspire creativity in the artists who capture their splendor,” said Julie Zeidner, conservancy spokeswoman.

The Santa Monicas, which cut across the southern tip of Ventura County, include hiking trails, mountain wilderness and a public recreation area.

Artists who work in oil, acrylics, watercolors, mixed-media, graphics, drawings and pastels are asked to submit no more than three pieces for display.

The work must have been created after January, 1990.

The works will be judged before winning pieces are displayed at the Peter Strauss Ranch in Agoura Hills on May 25, 26 and 27.
