Ashton-Tate to Appeal Ruling: The Torrance software publisher said Judge Terry J. Hatter has refused to reconsider his December ruling that dBase, the company’s star product, is not entitled to copyright protection. The judge stripped the company of its copyright last month because dBase was substantially derived from a software program developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena and Ashton-Tate repeatedly failed to disclose that fact in copyright applications. Ashton-Tate said it would appeal in the Ninth Federal Circuit Court.
