With only a week left to file for the April 2 election, eight candidates are vying for two Glendale City Council seats, while four others are competing for two seats on the city’s Board of Education.

Shirley Yap Griffin, a marketing consultant and president of a citywide homeowner group, announced her candidacy for the council Friday. Griffin was an unsuccessful council candidate in 1989.

The other candidates are John Beach, a semi-retired computer operations supervisor; Eileen Hadley Givens, a community activist and longtime Glendale resident; Dick Matthews, a former Carnation Co. executive and council candidate; Mary Ann Plumley, a real estate agent and Republican Party activist; Mary Ann Prelock, president of the Royal Canyon Property Owners Assn.; Bob Torres, a Montrose real estate analyst and president of that community’s Chamber of Commerce; and Mayor Larry Zarian.

Zarian is trying for a third four-year term on the council. Councilman Jerold Milner, whose seat also is at stake, has said he will not run for reelection.

Council candidates have until Jan. 24 to submit a $25 filing fee and a petition with at least 500 valid signatures of registered voters. A $650 fee will be charged if a candidate chooses to have a statement printed in the voter’s election pamphlet.

Griffin, 52, is a self-described slow-growth and homeowners candidate who said she wants to limit hillside development and apply more careful scrutiny to construction proposals throughout the city.

Griffin, president of Glendale Residents to Improve our Neighborhoods (GRIN), placed fourth among a field of 13 candidates in the 1989 election. She is an outspoken critic of the present City Council and favors a one-term limit for its members.

“I’ve lived in Glendale for almost 20 years and I’ve seen how the city is deteriorating,” she said. “People are unhappy.”

Griffin works for her husband’s law and international marketing firm. She is a member of several community groups, including the Women’s Civic League of Glendale, the Patrons Club of Glendale Community College, the Kiwanis Club, College Hills Homeowners Assn. and the Glendale Symphony Orchestra Assn.

In the Glendale school board race, board President Sharon Beauchamp is trying for a fourth four-year term, while incumbent Blanch Greenwood is vying for a fifth term.

Robert Burlison, a Glendale attorney, and Peter Musurlian, a field representative for Rep. Carlos Moorhead (R-Glendale), are attempting to unseat them.

Rae Berry, a semi-retired businesswoman and La Crescenta resident, and Robert Holmes, 43, a Glendale attorney, are running for third terms on the Glendale Community College Board of Trustees. So far, they are unopposed.
