From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A former judge in Santa Barbara County who used cocaine and presided over a hearing for one of his suppliers was disbarred by the state Supreme Court. A 5-2 majority agreed with the assessment of the State Bar Court that Michael J. Scott, who resigned from the bench in Santa Maria in 1987, “cast the legal profession and judiciary in great disrepute which will take years to remedy.” Dissenting Justice Edward Panelli said the court had removed eight judges since 1964 and had allowed all of them to practice law.
