Genentech Inc.: The South San Francisco biotech company posted a loss of $98 million for 1990 because of a $168-million special charge related to its merger with the Swiss pharmaceutical firm Roche. The loss contrasts with a $44-million profit in 1989. Revenue for 1990 rose 19% to a record $476.1 million.
