Stevens Quits UC Santa Cruz Post
Robert B. Stevens, chancellor of UC Santa Cruz since 1987, announced his resignation Thursday and said he would leave the university no later than next January.
Stevens, a British-born attorney and former law professor, said he intends to take a job in London with a Washington-based law firm and write a book on politics.
UC President David P. Gardner praised Stevens, 57, for leading the Santa Cruz campus through the difficult development of a plan to guide student body growth from the current 10,000 to 15,000 over the next 15 years. The campus faced strong community opposition to the proposed level of expansion.
UC officials said they will begin searching for a successor soon.
In an announcement released at the UC Board of Regents meeting in Riverside, Stevens said he “looks forward to a change of pace.” Before becoming chancellor at Santa Cruz, Stevens had been president of Haverford College in Pennsylvania.
