From Staff and Wire Reports

While still awaiting a decision by free-agent third baseman Gary Gaetti, the Angels increased their pitching depth Thursday by signing free-agent right-hander Jeff Robinson to a 1991 contract at an estimated $1 million with an option for 1992.

Robinson, 30, lives in Mission Viejo and pitched at Cal State Fullerton. He is expected to replace the recently traded Willie Fraser in the Angel bullpen and probably will be used in middle or late relief, his primary role during seven major league seasons.

Robinson had 14 saves for the San Francisco Giants in 1987, 11 victories and nine saves for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1988 and a 3-6 record with a 3.45 earned-run average for the New York Yankees last season.

“I had some other offers, but I was born and raised here, so coming back is a pretty exciting opportunity for me,” Robinson said.

The Angels also came to terms with relief pitcher Mark Eichhorn, who was eligible for arbitration. Eichhorn had a 2-5 record with 13 saves last year but received a $352,500 raise to $625,000.
